ABOUT
The 2025 Wisconsin Triennial features the work of 24 artists from across the state—from Hayward to Milwaukee, and from Sauk City to Appleton. All Wisconsin residents could apply without any fees, and four curators—Bob Sylvester, Mel Solomon Becker, Eleanor Pschirrer-West, and Paul Baker Prindle—selected the final participants. After an initial selection, the curators visited finalists’ studios throughout Wisconsin.
The curators looked for artists whose work strongly reflects today’s changing world—a world significantly altered in the three years since the last Wisconsin Triennial. Our current environment contrasts sharply with the circumstances 45 years ago when the museum hosted its first Wisconsin artist survey. Today’s artists respond to recent global events such as the pandemic, social changes, political conflicts, and increasing climate issues. Their artwork encourages viewers to reconsider familiar challenges and engage in meaningful discussions about contemporary life.
Some artists featured in the exhibition explore fresh approaches to color, materials, and traditions in art history. Others delve into specialized scholarly research or draw inspiration from popular culture. Regardless of their focus, exhibiting artwork involves inviting viewers into a shared exploration. This act of displaying art requires courage and openness from both maker and viewer.
For almost two decades now, MMoCA has been located in this remarkable building, a vibrant cultural space in downtown Madison. The museum provides opportunities for Madisonians and visitors to experience contemporary art and connect with each other. Whether a particular artwork surprises, comforts, or puzzles, the Wisconsin Triennial celebrates both the state’s artists and the community that brings meaning to their creations. Visitors’ experiences complete the creative process, transforming each artwork into a shared reflection of our current moment. We warmly welcome all visitors to explore this exhibition and deepen our shared understanding of today’s world.
