ARTIST STATEMENT
“My work references and incorporates historic techniques from religious paintings that left an indelible mark on my young mind with their meditations on morality and mortality. My paintings blend my personal biography with biblical stories, and tales of the lives of saints. I extract my visual vocabulary from medieval iconography using flattened picture planes, unrealistic perspective, and stylized figures to tell dramatic sagas playing with the doctrines these styles perpetuate. Portraits of my mother will appear in the same panel with saints and memories of my childhood become dramatic tales. I examine the role once held by the religious institutions of commissioning works of art and see the museums which now assume this role, as proxy for modern religion, housing the newly sacred.”
