ARTIST STATEMENT
“I am a 70 year old narrative painter. I have never wanted to be anything other than a narrative painter, a storyteller.
From the 1980s on many of my paintings have depicted stories of Native American history and culture. This includes my own Antell family history (between 1910 and 1954 fourteen Antell children, including my grandfather, were removed from the White Earth reservation and sent to the Pipestone Indian Training School), as well as national Native histories, both real and imagined.
In light of the current political climate in America, in which the accurate teaching of Native history is white-washed or outright banned, it is more important than ever that Native Americans tell their stories – past, present, and future.”
